The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Health Advisory for Paxil on December 8, 2005, based on American and Swedish studies showing that use of Paxil in the first trimester may increase risk of heart defects. Most defects observed in the studies were atrial or ventricular septal defects, conditions in which the wall between the right and left sides of the heart is not completely developed.
 Lung Defects (PPHN) and FDA Warnings on SSRI Medications
The FDA issued a Public Health Advisory for several SSRI medications on July 19, 2006, based on evidence showing their use may be linked to persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), a life-threatening lung condition that occurs when a newborn’s circulation system does not adapt to breathing outside the womb. Babies with PPHN cannot get adequate oxygen into the bloodstream and need intensive medical care. PPHN was six times more common in babies whose mothers took an SSRI antidepressant after the 20th week of pregnancy compared to babies whose mothers did not.
In November 2006, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist recommended that women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should not use Paxil.
Paxil May Increase Risk of Suicide in Young People
GSK is fighting suits in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. over claims that Paxil causes homicidal and suicidal behavior. The company has settled some suicide claims. In 2004, the GSK agreed to pay the state of New York $2.5 million to resolve claims that officials suppressed research showing Paxil may increase suicide risk in young people. The settlement also required Glaxo to publicly disclose the studies.
